Come All Ye Fisher Lassies

Come, all you fisher girls1, it's time to go with me
From Cairnbulg and Gamrie and from Inverallochie,
From Buckie and from Aberdeen and all the countryside around
We’re off to gut the herring, we’re off to Yarmouth town.

Oh, wake up in the morning with your bundles in your hand
Be at the station early or you’ll surely have to stand
Take plenty to eat and a kettle for your tea
Or you might die of hunger on the way to Yarmouth Quay.

Now, the journey is a long one, and it takes a day or two
And when you reach your lodging, you’ll fall asleep quickly
But you’ll wake at five with sleep still in your eyes
You will wake to find the gutting yards along the Yarmouth quay.

Now, there are barrel-makers, there are curers2there, and buyers, who are clever fellows
And young women at the pickle and others at the creels3
And you’ll wish the fish had all been left in the sea
By the time you finish gutting herring on the Yarmouth quay.

Well, it’s early in the morning, it’s late into the night
Your hands are cut and chapped, and they look quite a sight
And you cry like a child when you put them in the saltwater
And you wish you were a thousand miles away from Yarmouth Quay.

Now I’ve gutted fish in Lerwick and in Stornaway and Shields
I’ve worked along the Humber among the barrels and the creels
Whitby, Grimsby, I’ve traveled up and down
But the place to see the herring is the quay at Yarmouth Town

  • 1. young women who work gutting fish, but also a reference to Cilla and Ray’s surname
  • 2. curers pickle or “cure” the fish
  • 3. creels are the baskets used to catch fish and crustaceans

EMILIA • WRONG ADDRESS

An old story, you and I, once in love, a perfect tie.
We were happy, heart to heart, but now we’ve fallen apart.
I’m just a memory—get used to it!
Go to her now, let anger hit.

Run away, just leave me be.
I’ve had enough of your lies, you see.
You deserve to be alone in pain
No turning back—it’s all in vain.

At night, you’d call me, craving more.
With her, was it better than before?
My number’s gone, don’t try to find,
I’ve left it all behind.

When I was hurting, where did you stay?
With someone else, you chose to play.
Drink all you want—it won’t make me care.
Search for me, but I’m not there.

Remember the days I hid my tears?
Now you burn with the same fears.
Keep your words, they mean no more,
You killed the love we had before.

Heavenly clouds

Oh, heavenly clouds, eternal wanderers!
Over an azure steppe, a pearly brethren
Akin to myself, you travelers hasten
From the dear north to course southern.

Then who is exiling you: is it fate’s verdict?
Is it the envy concealed? Is it malice in the open?
Or is there a crime that levees a burden?
Could it be slander by friends that is poison?

No, you are fatigued by fields that stay barren…
Foreign are passions to you and the suffering alien
Always cold-bloodied, always independent,
You have no homeland, know not of banishment.

The solitary man of the night

The solitary man of the night, I am
The seal of silence upon my lips
I have departed, solitary and dejected
Severed my heart from the all
The loneliest of the lonely, sorrowful and disgraced
The one alone and without a tomorrow, that is me
The solitary man of the night, I am
The seal of silence upon my lips

The solitary man of the night, I am
Hundreds of untold stories linger on my lips
I have departed from your city
Packed my rucksack and left
Without the worry of tomorrow, with only myself, alone
The wanderer of these nights, that is who I am
Without the worry of tomorrow, with only myself, alone
The wanderer of these nights, that is who I am

The solitary man of the night, I am
The seal of silence upon my lips
The solitary man of the night, I am
Hundreds of untold stories linger on my lips
